Here is an opportunity to hunt woodland caribou on the island of Newfoundland. The population has declined in recent years and consequently tags are very limited. With that said, many feel the ministry has been very conservative with their tag allotment as hunters are still seeing good numbers of caribou and some excellent bulls are being taken. Success rates continue to be 100% on this hunt. In 2010, one of the hunters saw over 150 caribou, including ten shooter bulls, in three days of hunting. In 2011, they had 11 tags and had 100% success rate with several large bulls being taken.
This hunt is based out of a beautiful lodge with all the comforts of home plus more such as sauna, hot tub, billiards and satellite TV. Rooms are double occupancy with private baths. There is even a honeymoon suite! Meals are outstanding as is the service from the staff. This is an excellent place to bring your spouse for a vacation. $1000 for non-hunting guest, $1800 for non-hunting guest that accompanies the hunter in the field.
The lodge and hunts are located on the northern peninsula. Flights are into St. Anthony or Deer Lake. Can also drive and take the ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. It is a 6-7 hour drive from the ferry drop off to the lodge. Reservations are required for the ferry. It is recommended to take the night crossing both ways. Here is the link to the ferry rates: http://www.marine-atlantic.ca/en/rates/pabnsyrates.shtml.
Even though the accommodations are outstanding, hunting is still the priority. The outfitter is not satisfied until everyone has filled their tag. Keep in mind that tags are very limited and these hunts fill up fast – plan accordingly.
The outfitter also has a remote lodge and two remote cabins to use. These hunts are located 2-3 hours from the main lodge and accessed via truck and then Argos. The remote camps have wood heat, showers, bunk beds and generator electric. The location of the camp used is dependent upon where the caribou are. The remote camps are more rustic but are closer to the caribou herds so less daily travel is required.
This hunt can be somewhat strenuous as many miles can be put in each day walking the boggy terrain. The hunt can be modified for those not in the best of shape. This hunt is also very doable for bowhunters as oftentimes stalks can be made to within bow range.
Includes: 2×1 guiding, licenses, pick-up and return to St. Anthony or Deer Lake Airport, accommodations, all meals and trail lunches, transportation to and from hunting areas, preparation of game to take home including caping, trophy preparation and meat boxing. Does not include 6.5% tax on hunt and 13% tax on license.
