In recent years, there have been some real horror stories about Quebec caribou outfitters. There is a substantial difference in the quality and integrity of various northern Quebec caribou outfitters, and some of the bargain-priced hunts often end up being total busts.
The outfitters we are associated with have long-standing reputations in the industry. The outfitter for this particular hunt has been in business for over 25 years with thousands of repeat clients.
The hunts are conducted 1000 miles north of Montreal in Nunavik, Quebec. The village of Kuujjuaq is the base of operations during the hunting season from mid-August to early October. Hunters fly from Montreal on 727 jets to Kuujjuaq in under 2 hours. From Kuujjuaq travel is via chartered Twin Otter wheeled aircraft to camp. In less than 3 hours after leaving Montreal, hunters will be in the field hunting!
At last count, the population of Quebec Labrador caribou was estimated at over one million and growing. It is generally accepted among the experts that two different herds exist – the George River Herd and the Leaf River Herd. While there are slight differences in migrational patterns for each herd – on occasion they will join into one unit particularly in the fall in a location just south of Kuujjuaq.
Due to the high population of caribou in recent years – Quebec permits hunters to harvest two caribou of any sex under one license fee of approximately $325. Many record book bulls have been taken on this hunt.
Hunts are conducted from August 18 – October 6. Hunters may use rifle, blackpowder or bow. With over 15 different camps, hunters are put where the caribou are and can be moved to another location if need be.
