This hunt is in west central Colorado in units that have over-the-counter tags for archery, 2nd rifle and 3rd rifle seasons. 1st rifle and 4th rifle are via the draw but have been 100% draw odds with no preference points. Muzzleloader tags take 3-4 preference points to draw depending upon the unit.

The outfitter has excellent private ranches that hold good numbers of elk and mule deer. The elevation ranges from 5,000 – 10,000 feet and the habitat is a mix of open meadows, sage brush, cedar, oak brush and aspens. Lodging is in the guest house or cabins depending on the ranch. The ranches have resident herds of elk and then gain additional animals throughout the fall.

This is an excellent choice for hunters that are looking for a hunt with high success rates on respectable 5-6 point bulls. The top end is a bit over over 300 inches. Shot opportunity is often 90%+ on bulls.

An added bonus is that a bear may be harvested during this hunt for a $500 trophy fee – must purchase a bear license prior to hunt to do this. Many bears here are color phase being brown, cinnamon or chocolate.

License cost is $660 plus a $10 habitat stamp. Anyone born after January 1, 1949 must have a hunter education card to apply – Colorado accepts hunter education cards from other states. Application deadline is the first Tuesday in April.

Includes: meals, lodging, guiding, field care and caping of animal, delivery of meat to processor, Montrose airport pick up.
