Colorado Elk or Elk / Mule Deer Combo - Hunt #52-EMD1

Here’s a high success, value priced hunt in central Colorado. It can be done for elk only or for elk/mule deer as a combo during archery, muzzleloader, 2nd rifle and 3rd rifle seasons. Deer are not in season during 1st and 4th rifle seasons so these two hunts are elk only.

The hunt is lodge based and hunters are transported via truck to their hunting area and then proceed on foot. ATV’s are also used depending on the area hunted. Hunting is done on both private and public lands with the majority being on public lands. Elevations range from 9000 feet to over 11,000. Horses are used for game retrieval when needed. The guides are local guys that really know the area and have decades of experience.

Shot opportunity for elk has been 80% with many respectable 5×5 and 6×6 bulls taken. The quality has gone up significantly in the past few years. Success rates run high for each season due to a good population of resident elk and an influx of migratory elk during the 3rd and 4th rifle seasons. Shot opportunity for deer is normally 80%.

Elk preference points needed for non-residents to draw in 2011 were: archery -1; muzzleloader – 3; 1st, 2nd and 3rd rifle – 2; and 4th rifle 1. Deer preference points needed by non-residents were: archery 1; muzzleloader 2; 2nd and 3rd rifle – 1. Some landowner vouchers are available for both deer and elk for hunters that did not draw tags. There is an additional fee for the vouchers.

Non-resident license cost is $579 for elk and $349 for deer. A $10 habitat stamp is also required. Anyone born after January 1, 1949 must have a hunter education card to apply – Colorado accepts hunter education cards from other states. Application deadline is April 3, 2012.

Includes meals, lodging, 2×1 guiding (add $700 for 1×1 guiding), transportation during the hunt, field care of game, delivery of meat to processor, delivery of trophy to taxidermist.

2012 season openings remain for muzzleloader, 1st rifle and late cow season. 2013 openings remain for all seasons except 2nd and 4th rifle. The 2014 season is wide open and be reserved now.
