It’s not often that you can do a horseback elk hunt and get to stay in a lodge every night. That is exactly the set-up here on this private land hunt in NW Colorado. This area is home of the White River elk herd which is the largest herd in Colorado. The ranch holds elk throughout the spring, summer and fall and also picks up new migrating elk throughout November. It is not uncommon for hunters to see between 100 and 300 elk a day.

This is a great hunt for anyone not after a trophy bull but instead looking for a place with very high success rates. With that said, they still kill some very respectable bulls on this hunt. An added bonus is a black bear may be taken on any of the rifle season hunts for no extra charge – hunters must buy a bear license ($351) to do this.

Hunts are held during archery and all 4 rifle seasons. Licenses for archery, 2nd rifle and 3rd rifle seasons are over-the-counter. 1st rifle and 4th rifle are via the draw process. Preference points needed to draw licenses are as follows:1st rifle 0 points and 4th rifle 0 points.

Hunting is via spot and stalk and stand hunting. Horses and foot travel are the primary modes of transportation. The outfitter will tailor the hunt to the hunter’s physical abilities. The elevation at the ranch ranges from 7000 - 8500 feet.

License cost is $629 plus a $10 habitat stamp. Anyone born after January 1, 1949 must have a hunter education card to apply – Colorado accepts hunter education cards from other states. The application deadline is early April but over-the-counter 2nd and 3rd season rifle licenses can be bought prior to the start of season either online or in person at licensing agents throughout Colorado.

Includes: meals, lodging, 2×1 guiding, field care, skinning and caping of elk, delivery of meat to processor.
