Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemiones)

Mule deer, a unique species to the West. Chasing a mature buck can be one of the most rewarding experiences in someone’s life. Ranging from the highest of high country basins, rolling sage brush hills, to down in the dry desert, where they find cliff’d out bluffs as their home. Let us help you get an opportunity at a true representation of the species.

The types of hunts you should Expect

High Country Hunts

  • Most of these are Early season, often velvet bucks with most access being via horseback & wall tent or backpack and your own two feet!

  • A lot of long days behind glass in the hot sun watching bachelor buck groups move from one high willow patch and cover to the other. As you wait patiently for the big one to slip up

Incredible experience, but can be physically demanding

Open Country

  • Some of our favorite ways to put the sneak on a big buck through tall Indian grass and Sage here at PHA is of our favorite hunts! Or tip toeing from one break to another, and finally some of the most thrilling rolling open plains terrain

  • A lot of times there can be many variable’s to hunting Mule Deer, from the country that Mule deer inhabit, and including that the time of year. Long glassing sessions in during the early season and pre-rut trying to pin a big buck bedded down. Or sitting in an ideal travel corridor waiting for a Rutted up late season buck, that no one has seen before, to come stepping out

Ranch / Private Land Hunts

  • One of the biggest advantages of hunting wild deer on private land is well managed deer populations and sustained genetics. A lot of our outfitters with private land mule deer hunts offer a trophy experience with a long history of big bucks.

  • Another plus for hunting mature bucks on large ranches/private land, is that the pressure is controlled. Not having to worry about someone else pushing that dream buck somewhere else.

  • Large ranches and private land leases, with proficient guides on sometimes tens of thousands of acres. Most of the time lodging is included on these hunts, with stunning views and a good nights rest.
